Golf tourney and walk-a-thon to raise funds for breast cancer research

August 09, 2006

Avatar Properties Inc. is set to stage its second annual Charity Golf Tournament & Walk-a-thon to raise funds for breast cancer education and research by Florida’s Sun Coast Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

Both events will take place on Friday, October 20th at Solivita, Avatar’s award-winning active adult community which is located on the Polk County side of Poinciana.

A field of 144 golfers is expected to tee it up for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start at Solivita’s Stonegate Golf Club, while a host of walkers are expected to lace up their walking shoes for an 8:30 a.m. start at Solivita’s Freedom Park. Last year the two events raised $14,750 for breast cancer research, according to Bari Stone, events coordinator.

Entry fees for the golf tournament are $75 for individuals and $300 for foursomes. Fees include golf cart, greens fees, beverages, continental breakfast, luncheon, and a ticket for a door prize drawing. Awards also will be given to winning teams, as well as longest drive and closest-to-the-pin prizes for men and women.

A $20 registration fee for the Walk-a-thon, which will feature 2.5K and 5K tracks, includes a T-shirt for those registering before September 7th, live entertainment, refreshments, goody bags, door prizes, giveaways, and sponsorship prizes for the most pledges raised by an individual and club/organization.

Golf sponsorships include Diamond ($750 and $500), Platinum ($300), Gold ($250), Silver ($200) and Bronze (gift donations) which cover everything from meals and refreshments, to prizes and hole sponsorships. Sponsorships also include company/individual name recognition on signage and various tournament venues. Walk-A-Thon Pink Ribbon level sponsors receive company name recognition for the donation of cash and/or prizes.

Checks should be made payable to Avatar Properties Breast Cancer Foundation Fund. All proceeds will benefit Florida’s Sun Coast Affiliate of the Dallas, Texas-based Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, according to Stone.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death for women ages 35-54, and the disease also accounts for more than 75 percent of all cancer deaths in women 55 years of age and older. Although most people tend to think of breast cancer as a women’s disease, men get breast cancer, too. According to the American Cancer Society, about 1,200 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in American men each year.
